From Rs 3 crore opening to Rs 100 crore dream: ‘Project Hail Mary’ stuns India box office in insane run

A slow-burn sci-fi film is turning into one of the biggest surprises at the Indian box office this year. With steady collections even in its fourth week, it is now closing in on a rare milestone few standalone Hollywood films achieve in India.

It started like a quiet visitor at the Indian box office… almost unnoticed, almost underestimated. A sci-fi Hollywood film with no franchise tag, no superhero mask, and no loud fanbase suddenly began doing something unusual. It stayed. Week after week. And now, ‘Project Hail Mary’ is turning heads in a way no one quite predicted.

Even on its 4th Saturday, when most foreign films start fading out, this one simply refused to disappear. The Ryan Gosling-led space adventure pulled in another Rs. 2.25 crore, quietly pushing its total India gross to Rs. 75.75 crore. The film had opened to just Rs. 3 crore in India.

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, the film is now looking at a strong 4th weekend total of around Rs. 5.50 crore. Trade trends suggest that the momentum is not stopping here. In fact, if the current pace holds, ‘Project Hail Mary’ is expected to touch nearly Rs. 85 crore by the end of this week. And from there, the bigger conversation begins; it now has a realistic shot at crossing the Rs. 100 crore gross mark in India.

A quiet space film that refused to fade away

The film’s performance is even more striking when you look at its genre history in India. Space-based sci-fi has never been an easy sell in the Indian market.

Yet, there have been exceptions that left a mark, like ‘Interstellar’ and ‘Gravity’, both of which managed to connect with audiences beyond language and culture.

‘Project Hail Mary’ now joins that conversation. The difference, however, is that it is not riding on an established brand or sequel advantage. It is a standalone story. And still, it has managed to build a steady audience week after week.

The long box office climb week by week

Here is how the film has performed so far in India:

Week One (8 days): Rs. 29.50 crore
Week Two: Rs. 24.25 crore

3rd Friday: Rs. 2.50 crore
3rd Saturday: Rs. 4.75 crore
3rd Sunday: Rs. 4.65 crore
3rd Monday: Rs. 1.60 crore
3rd Tuesday: Rs. 2.25 crore
3rd Wednesday: Rs. 1.45 crore
3rd Thursday: Rs. 1.30 crore

4th Friday: Rs. 1.25 crore
4th Saturday: Rs. 2.25 crore (estimated)

Total India Gross: Rs. 75.75 crore

Even in its fourth week, the film is still adding meaningful numbers, not just token collections.
